Request Our Services

Schools and districts may request services from the Strategic Learning Center (SLC) during the process of exploring adolescent literacy programs or during the planning process. To request these services or ask questions about our services, please call the SLC office - 785-856-7650.

The services provided by the SLC are outlined below:

Exploring Options for Adolescent Literacy and Increasing Achievement

The Strategic Learning Center may assist schools and districts in the process of exploring options and determining a program that best meets the needs of the school/district.

After a school or district expresses interest in an initiative to improve literacy and increase achievement, the leadership may choose one or more of the following options to increase staff awareness of the program:

  • SLC sends materials for the school/district to review.
  • Staff members visit the CLC(TM) website.
  • Faculty views the CLC(TM) DVD in department or faculty meetings.
  • SLC staff present an overview of CLC(TM) at the school/district. (Fee for Presentation applies)
  • School representatives visit school sites where CLC(TM) has been successful.

For awareness materials and presentations, contact the Strategic Learning Center - 785-856-7650

Planning a Tiered School-wide Literacy Program

When the school/district decides that the CLC model is a good fit, school/district leaders design a plan to begin the school-wide literacy-centered reform work in collaboration with the SLC. Since this plan is individualized to meet the needs of each school, the SLC tailors a unique planning process for each school.

The process of designing a plan includes (a) developing long-range outcomes for 3-5 years, (b) developing short-range outcomes for the first year, (c) identifying possible barriers and solutions, (d) assessing the existing infrastructure as well as what is needed, and (e) discussing other factors or parameters that may enhance or impede the plan.

Depending on the needs of the school, the SLC and a CLC(TM) Team may:

  • Lead the school through an action planning process.
  • Use guiding questions for discussions about where to begin.
  • Facilitate a needs or gap analysis by school staff.
  • Anticipate obstacles and identify solutions.

This planning process leads to the development of a scope of work and a budget. The scope of work includes a plan for the high quality professional development (PD) needed to meet the outcomes of the school-wide literacy-centered reform plan. The planned professional development will be based on the National Staff Development Council (NSDC; nsdc.org) standards and the principles of Teacher-Guided Professional Development endorsed by KUCRL.

The PD plan typically includes many types of professional development structures: face-to-face professional development, coaching, consultation, facilitated collaboration sessions for content areas, meetings with the Literacy Leadership Team and administrators, demonstration lessons, and on-line or technology-assisted learning.

When the scope of work and budget are approved, a professional developer or a team of professional developers begins working with the school/district. The SLC works with the school/district through all of the phases of the effort.
