About the Strategic Learning Center
Our Mission
The Strategic Learning Center provides school districts nationwide with cutting edge, research-proven practices that effectively support the development of literate, independent and successful adolescent learners.
Who We Are
The Strategic Learning Center promotes success for adolescents in school and in life. We work in close partnership with the Center for Research on Learning, University of Kansas, the developers of the models we implement. Based in Seattle, Washington, the SLC provides professional development programs acclaimed by schools throughout the nation.
What We Do
We collaborate with schools and districts to:
- Evaluate existing academic programs and implement a research-based model for adolescent literacy development, tailored to the programs and needs of the students of a school or district.
- Integrate those initiatives that are already producing results for schools with our research-proven programs to create a program that is unique.
- Provide ongoing support, including teacher training and behavioral coaching, resource development and evaluation.
- Supplement professional development services with technology-based tools and resources.
Why We Are Effective
- We use a school-wide improvement model based on more than twenty-eight years of research by the Center for Research on Learning at the University of Kansas.
- We employ a dedicated staff of educators and professionals, each of whom has more than 25 years of experience in education or management.
- We partner with a network of Professional Developers certified by the Center for Research on Learning.
- We provide individualized programs that respond to the needs of every school — and every child.
Board of Trustees

Consequently, it makes sure the Strategic Learning Center is financially sustainable, that its policies are consistent with legal practice, and that its work continues to be visionary and within the scope of the organization’s mission.
